The Kimberley and Pilbara Girl Finals were held on Friday, 5 October in Broome last week.
16-year-old Verinia Bin Saad from Port Hedland won Pilbara Girl whilst 23-year-old Brittany Keen-Mosquito from Warmun won Kimberley Girl.
Horizon Power was delighted to continue its support of the Kimberley and Pilbara Girl in 2018 for the fourth year in a row.
The program has supported over 400 participants in this capacity building program for young Indigenous women from regional and remote Western Australia.
Friday night's Finals in Broome featured a packed crowd at Goolarri Media including families, friends and corporate partners.
The event included local dancers, musicians, food, a powerful audio visual display and special guest performer, Mary Attracta Connolly from Opera Under the Stars.
Local Member for the Kimberley MLA, Josie Farrer was in attendance on the night as well as representatives from corporate partners such as Compass Group, Woodside, Virgin Australia, Karratha City Shopping Centre, Buru Energy, Fong’s Store, Camden’s Jewellery and more.
Horizon Power employees take every opportunity to be involved in Kimberley and Pilbara Girl each year:
- Community Liaison & Compliance Co-Ordinator Terry Shadforth assisted with the program's career workshop, explaining the range of pathways towards roles in the electrical industry.
- Business Services Officer Vanessa Sadler attended the heats and stated, “Our communities have their young women learning with their peers and taking those skills back home, it’s just great!”.
- Kimberley Manager of Operations, Scott Beckwith attended the Finals and hosted VIP representatives from the ABC, Sheffield Resources and the Kimberley Development Commission.
- West Kimberley Retail & Community Manager, Jodie Lynch, was tasked with the difficult job of Judging.
Congratulations to all participants, who are judged on their workshop participation, live stage questions and panel discussion, voiceover video, grooming and overall look, poise and stage presence and well done to 2018 Kimberley and Pilbara Girl winners Verinia and Brittany.
About Kimberley and Pilbara Girl
This valuable initiative by Goolarri Media targets young Indigenous women between the ages of 16 and 25.
Structured workshops and showcase events address contemporary issues helping participants to overcome the impact of social, economic and isolation disadvantages and bringing the community together in a celebratory capacity.
The main aim of the program is to instigate positive change in the personal and professional capacity of young Indigenous women, directing them to make positive life choices and forge constructive pathways.
