More than 500 Roebourne and Cossack residents may be without power for up to 12 hours after a high load truck brought down power lines on Point Samson Road, near the Roebourne turn-off, at about 7.30 am today.
There were no reported injuries.
Horizon Power Retail and Community Manager Michelle South said the truck’s high load hit the overhead powerlines and brought down lines.
“The damage to the lines is substantial and a section of affected line will need to be rebuilt,” Ms South said.
“Unfortunately, this means it may take up to 12 hours to restore the supply of electricity to the Roebourne and Cossack communities.
“We apologise for the inconvenience but customers can be assured that our crews will be working as quickly and safely as possible to rectify the situation.”
The area has been cordoned off and emergency services are on the scene. Traffic management is also in attendance.
An electrical fault caused a small grass fire in the area which was quickly extinguished.
Ms South said it was important that people were aware of the height and width of the load they are transporting.
“The safety of both the public and those involved in transporting oversize loads is the most important aspect in load movement and Horizon Power will not compromise safety in any circumstance,” she said.
