Horizon Power has launched its Horizon Discovery Zone (HDZ) website to continue spreading Gilbert’s messages about how electricity works, being safe around it and using it smartly.
Horizon Power introduced Gilbert, our frilled-neck lizard mascot for our HDZ education program, to primary school children in regional Western Australia in 2010.
Horizon Power Managing Director Elect Frank Tudor said he was proud to be able to launch the interactive educational website which would be available to children throughout the whole State.
Education and Energy Minister Peter Collier said Horizon Power's new HDZ website provided fun activities designed to teach children the importance of being safe around electricity and understanding how it works and where it comes from.
"The next generation of West Australians will also be well aware of the importance of saving electricity to help the environment through this important initiative," Mr Collier said.
Horizon Power has now rolled out HDZ workshops and resource kits to educate children about electricity, electrical safety, energy efficiency and renewable energy to schools in most of its regional service areas.
Horizon Power has also joined forces with the Department of Education to make available its very latest HDZ primary school education resource book, Discovering Junior Electricity as well as its existing resources, Discovering Electricity to public schools throughout the State.
The Horizon Power educational materials will be available to teachers throughout the State as it is aligned with the State’s teaching curriculum. The new junior HDZ resource book has been developed in accordance with the Australia Curriculum Science and Literacy Strand.
Horizon Power has also recently partnered with a major mining resource company, Rio Tinto, to provide the HDZ educational program to more than 1,000 children in primary schools in the towns of Paraburdoo, Tom Price, Dampier, Wickham and Pannawonica.
