Electric Vehicle Pilot - The 2020 Question
We are preparing for the transition to electric vehicles (EV) in regional WA
As the world moves towards cleaner electrified and hydrogen transport solutions, Horizon Power is working to better understand how to prepare for the eventual transition. While the timing is uncertain, predictions are that adoption of electric vehicles in Western Australia will be strong and swift.
The Electric Vehicle Pilot
From February 2020, Horizon Power is running a 12-month Electric Vehicle Pilot to gain insights into user charging behaviour and the impact electric vehicles will have on Horizon Power microgrid networks.
Horizon Power team members in Broome and Esperance have been selected to drive two Hyundai Kona electric vehicles. They will be supported by two local charging stations at work and home - a 22Kw AC electric fast charging station at the depot and slower 7Kw AC chargers in their homes.
Combined the vehicle and charging stations will provide valuable insights into electric vehicle use, user requirements and charging behaviours.
Members of the public will also have access to charge their own vehicles at the depot charging stations at no cost during the 12 month Pilot.

The Hyundai Kona 100% Electric Vehicle
The Hyundai Kona 100% electric vehicle was selected for the Pilot due to its large driving range – up to 449 kilometres on a full charge- which makes it suitable for driving the distances commonly experienced in our regional areas.
The Kona has a 64kWh battery pack and 150kW electric drive motor.
Depending on the type of charging infrastructure used, the Hyundai Kona can be charged to 80% capacity in just under an hour (54 minutes) using a 100kW DC fast charger, or to 100% capacity in 9.5 hours using an AC wall-box charger typically installed in homes.
