A section of Karratha’ s Dampier Highway streetscape has received a facelift after employees from Horizon Power, the City of Karratha and the Pilbara Development Commission teamed up with local school students to plant 200 trees.
The tree planting, which took place on World Environment Day, involved students from Karratha Senior High School, Pegs Creek, St Paul’s and Karratha Primary Schools.
The area is now free of overhead power poles and wires after the successful completion of the Pilbara Underground Power Project.
Horizon Power General Manager Ziggy Wilk, said he was proud to partner with the region’s future generations to make Karratha an even greener, more vibrant and livable city.
“We’re committed to making a positive environmental contribution in the communities in which we operate. This means both minimising the visual impact of our network and offering customers renewable energy options such as solar power,” said Mr. Wilk.
“We also live and work in these communities and it’s been really great having our local schools on board, helping us transform this major strip of highway. I’d like to personally thank all of the students who turned out to represent their schools and make a difference.”
City of Karratha Deputy Mayor, Grant Cucel, also participated in the planting day and said the trees added an immediate visual appeal to one of the city’s major thoroughfares.
“This work has built further on the success of the City’s town centre revitalisation Program and partnering with Horizon Power, the Pilbara Development Commission and our local schools and businesses makes it even more meaningful,” said Mr Cucel.
The event was further supported by local businesses All West Drilling, Poinciana Nursery, Railway Possessions Australia and St John’s Ambulance, who donated their time and services.
